Air conducts 'Symphony' on North American outing
Fresh off the release of their new studio album, "Pocket Symphony," French electronica duo Air will tour North America this spring for the first time since 2004.
The pair--Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Nicolas Godin--will kick off the 14-city tour with an April 21 show in Vancouver, and plans include an April 29 stop at Indio, CA's Coachella music festival. Details are included below.
Norwegian-born singer/songwriter Kate Havnevik , on her first US tour, has been tapped to support.
Although the two principals of Air perform most of the music on their albums by themselves, they will tour with an extended lineup, including Dunckel on keyboard and guitar; Godin on guitar, synths, bass and vocals; Vincent Taurelle on keyboards; Steve Jones on guitar; and Earl Harvin on drums.
Released March 6, "Pocket Symphony" is the duo's fourth official studio album, following 2004's "Talkie Walkie." As usual, a number of guest vocalists show up on the album, this time including Pulp's Jarvis Cocker and Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon.
"Pocket Symphony" finds Dunckel and Godin introducing new sounds into Air's formula, namely a Far East influence through the addition of koto (sometimes called a Japanese floor harp) and shamisen, a Japanese 3-stringed instrument similar to a banjo. Godin learned to play these new instruments with the help of "an Okinawa master," according to the band's publicist.
"Increasingly, we are trying to get away from the pop sound," Dunckel said in the band's online bio. "The way we work is that we improvise together. It's like magic because we always have something in common, like a new direction of desire, each time when we write a song. There's always a conscious desire to reject the previous album."
