Alan Jackson To Begin 2000 With Arena Tour

Alan Jackson , who recently released an album that consists of honky-tonk cover songs as well as his take on Jimmy Buffett's "Margaritaville," has lined up performances at five arenas for early 2000. He's also confirmed to headline two concerts during the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo in Texas.

Jackson is expected to be on the road through much of next year, but no other dates have been confirmed.

The new album, titled ''Under The Influence,'' debuted on at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 album chart on Nov. 13, and has spawned the country radio hit ''Pop A Top.'' The album sold 114,000 copies in its first week, making it Jackson's fastest-selling album of new recordings, according to Billboard. His 1995 greatest hits collection moved 115,000 copies in its initial week.

Since scoring his first hit in 1990 (along with an Academy of Country Music Award for best new male vocalist), Jackson has joined the handful of country music headliners who can consistently draw arena-sized crowds.

In 1999, Jackson anchored a series of concerts that featured up-and-coming country music artists who played about four songs each. The early 2000 shows look to be more traditional, with Arista Nashville act Lonestar signed on as the opener for most dates.

Jackson also headlined a performance at Brazil's largest rodeo in 1999, the Barretos Rodeo in Sao Paulo, playing to a crowd that was estimated at more than 50,000.

Jackson scored points with the crowd at this year's CMA Awards when he sang a few lines of the George Jones hit ''Choices'' at the end of his performance. Jones decided against performing at the awards show after Country Music Association officials asked him to perform an abridged version of the song.

Recently, Jackson entered the studio with George Strait to record a duet of the Larry Cordle & Lonesome Standard Time song ''Murder On Music Row'' for a forthcoming Strait greatest-hits album.
