Album Review: Drowning Pool, "Full Circle" (Eleven Seven)

Drowning Pool 's new CD could be called the rebirth of the hard rock band, which lost its founding lead singer, David Williams, to heart disease in 2002. The Texans recruited a a new singer in 2004, but that incarnation of the band failed after just one album due to the standard "creative differences." But now Drowning Pool swears the third time's a charm with the addition Ryan McCombs, former vocalist for the band Soil.

The band fills "Full Circle" with heavily sustained guitars and perfectly timed double-bass drum beats. Driving the songs is McCombs' James Hetfield-like affectation, giving the album as a whole a classic metal sound. Many acoustic parts act as bridges, giving the band some newfound diversity.

Unlike many of today's band's, Drowning Pool does not shy away from resurrecting guitar solos. These solos are melody driven and feel very much a part of the song, and add muscle to the proceedings.

The only weak link on "Full Circle" is the cover of Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell," a paltry inclusion. The song should be left to Idol's devices.

Although it doesn't break new ground, "Full Circle" acts as a proper introduction to McCombs.
