LiveDaily Interview: Eddie Argos of Art Brut
For Eddie Argos, easygoing, animated frontman of UK rock unit Art Brut , acquiring things to do isn't a problem--it's getting everything done that proves most difficult.
Aside from singing and writing songs with Art Brut, Argos is a painter, book author, comic-book collector and regular blogger on The Eddie Argos Resource, where he freely speaks his mind: "Avril Lavigne is a bitch."
Of his many artistic endeavors, Argos explained: "I was committed to writing bi-weekly reviews about comics (on the 'Pow! To The People' website), but I always seem to start things with the best intentions and then don't finish them. But, I like being busy, so it's pretty good."
Luckily for music fans, with Art Brut, Argos has completed three albums--the most recent being April 2009's "Art Brut Vs. Satan," produced by the Pixies' Frank Black. The title references the band's break from their label, and the 11 tracks address lighthearted matters like hangovers, milkshakes and girl obsessions--all typical topics for Art Brut. Consistent with the band's amusing high-energy punk-pop tunes, the chatty Argos is known for spontaneous stage antics, candid rants about his sex life and bizarre physical stunts.
While in Cambridge, MA, on the current tour, the jovial Argos spoke with LiveDaily about his numerous projects, forgetting lyrics onstage and fascination with time travel.
LiveDaily: What's been on your mind most lately?
Eddie Argos: I've had some time off. This is the first day of the tour, which is why I sound so excited. I love touring America, so I'm sort of bouncing off the walls. I was home last week briefly playing with the Pixies.
It was amazing. It was weird because we're kind of friendly with them. I wasn't that shy. We did the album with [Frank Black] and I wasn't shy about that either. After we did the show with them, I was really intimidated by them. I was really freaked out. Frank Black is much more intimidating after seeing him perform on stage. They were f---ing awesome.
What are you looking forward to most about this tour?
I'm excited to be touring some of the places first that I'm usually exhausted at by the time we get there. Visiting these places early on, I sort of still have my mental health. I just love touring America, really. The buses are nice. Everyone's so friendly over here. We don't have but, like, two days off for, like, a month, so I'm looking forward to that because I love playing shows.
You're shows are so spontaneous and fun. Do you ever get nervous or forget what you're doing onstage?
Sometimes--a little bit, well, a lot a bit before the Pixies. Their fans made quite savage comments. I think I hid it quite well that I was nervous. I don't know what happened to me, but for some reason I forgot the entire first verse of "Direct Hit," which is really embarrassing. [I forgot] every single line of it. So I just pretended the microphone wasn't working. I was moving my lips and not saying anything. I acted all confused while I tried to remember the words. So, whenever stuff like that happens I try and hide it. [laughs]
You love DC Comics and sing about them. Who is your favorite superhero?
Booster Gold; he's a new superhero. I've read [that comic] since I was about 12. I found, like, a great big box of all of the comics bundled together, so I bought them all. I'm a collector. The comic ended, like, in the late '80s, so it wasn't until the '90s that I discovered him, and I would buy any comic that I could find with him, even if it was a bit part. He's my favorite superhero. It's almost like he is a friend. What am I, 29 now? I've liked him for about 17 years.
How many comics do you own?
Oh, I don't know--hundreds. Well, I left them with my dad for safe keeping and he threw them all away. I have a lot less than I used to, but I'm over it. If they had been my Batman comics I would have been pretty sad. [laughs] I've got nowhere to keep them anyway. I've got too many to count, I think.
If you could have a super power what would you want to have?
I like the idea of time traveling--not to interfere or anything. [laughs] I'm quite nosey, so I'd like to travel in time and spy on people. I think that would be quite a good superhero power.
What time period would you want to visit first?
The '40s--that'd be interesting; I love the '40s. Yeah, I'd just go all over. I'm quite indecisive, so I'd like to time travel but not be specific about where I was going. It would be quite a good surprise. [laughs] 'Where'd you go?' 'Back in time to Athens.' That'd be quite good. A dysfunctional time-traveling ability is what I would like. [laughs]
Are you thinking about your next music project? Do you write music on the road?
Well, a little bit. I've always written words because I think it's fun. Yeah, and I think music might turn up in sound check and things. [The band] writes music and I write the words so it all churns out nicely. We're always writing. I want our next album to be out sooner than the last two, which took about two years [each]. I'd rather this one out by next summer.
Do you test new songs on the road?
Yeah, I don't know if it's really testing out because we do it for fun, but yeah. Quite a lot of the last album got played live before we recorded it.
You seem to have so much fun onstage; what is your favorite aspect of being in a band?
It's all part of the same thing, really. Like, when I write the words, I'm always conscious that, at some point, someone is going to hear them. You're always going to share it. It's all kind of lumped together. I just like being in a band. It's all one great big load of fun.
What are you most excited about artistically in terms of the future?
I've got a side project coming out in December: Everybody Was In The French Resistance ... Now. I'm pretty excited about that. We replied to pop songs. There's a song called "Hey," but it's a song by Jimmy Mack, so we wrote "'Hey It's Jimmy Mack" in response to Martha Reeves. Avril Lavigne has a horrible song about stupid people's boyfriends, so we wrote a song called, "But You Know I've Got a Girlfriend,"telling Avril Lavigne to f--- off. Every song is a response to a pop song. We're touring [the album] and I'm excited about that as well.
You were also writing a book. Have you finished that?
I've finished the proposal. I've got an agent looking at it. She's getting back to me. But, yeah, it's pretty much done. It's nice to have that done because it took a while. I don't have a title for it yet.
