Grateful Dead's Bill Kreutzmann plots winter shows
Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann has lined up a pair of year-end shows in Hawaii, as well as a slate of February dates on the mainland.
The performer, who currently lives in Hawaii, will play a Dec. 29 show in Maui, followed by a New Year's Eve performance on the same island. In February, Kreutzmann kicks off a five-city Western US outing with a Feb. 12 performance in Santa Cruz, CA. Dates are below.
Joining Kreutzmann on stage for the Maui shows will be Austin bluesman Papa Mali, bassist James "Hutch" Hutchinson from the Bonnie Raitt Band, and pianist Matt Hubbard from Willie Nelson's band. For the February run, Kreutzmann will be accompanied by Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge and Scott Murawski of veteran rock outfit Max Creek.
Following the dissolution of the Dead after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995, Kreutzmann--one of only four Grateful Dead members to play every one of the band's more than 3,500 live shows--returned to his home in Hawaii, but soon took up touring with various musical projects, including The Other Ones, featuring Dead stalwarts Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart. The band eventually morphed into The Dead (dropping "Grateful" in honor of Garcia's memory) and toured extensively until 2004.
In October, Kreutzmann reunited with Weir, Lesh and Hart for a one-off performance at Penn State University in support of Barack Obama's presidential campaign.
