Billy Bob Thornton tours North America, new album due in August

Billy Bob Thornton --who played in bar bands before he became famous for his roles in films like "Sling Blade" and "Monster's Ball"--is about to hit the road behind his sophomore solo album.

"The Edge of the World," Thornton's follow-up to 2001's "Private Radio," is scheduled for release on Aug. 19. The first single from the rootsy country album is titled "The Desperate One."

On tour, Thornton "will perform songs from this album and mix in other tunes that have become fan favorites," according to his official website.

The tour features headlining gigs at a mix of clubs, casinos and fairs. Thornton will also open shows for Heart, Willie Nelson and Huey Lewis and the News.

On Sept. 7, Thornton appears in Columbus, OH, at the annual Farm Aid benefit show. Other confirmed acts include Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Brooks & Dunn, Dave Matthews, Sheryl Crow, Toby Keith and Trick Pony.

Last year, Thornton embarked on his inaugural headlining tour, and also opened a series of dates for Elvis Costello.
