Boyzone singer Stephen Gately found dead at his home in Majorca
Boyzone singer Stephen Gately was found dead Saturday (10/10) at his vacation home in Majorca, Spain, according to a BBC report. The cause of the 33-year-old singer's death has not been determined.
Police, who were called to a house near Port d'Andratx on the western tip of the island on Saturday afternoon, told the BBC there were no signs of suspicious circumstances.
Gately, who was originally from Dublin, was one of two vocalists for Boyzone, which was formed in 1993 as an Irish alternative to Take That. The boy band had numerous No. 1 hits in the UK during the 1990s. They split in 2000 and reformed in 2007.
Gately pursued a solo career after the band split, which included a starring role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
Gately is often noted for being one of the first boy-band members to reveal that he was gay. Gately and longtime partner Andy Cowles wed in a commitment ceremony in Las Vegas in 2003 and more formally in a civil-partnership ceremony in London in 2006, according to the BBC.
A post-mortem examination is expected to be carried out this week to determine Gately's cause of death. A spokesperson for his family reportedly attributed his death to natural causes and ruled out drugs and suicide.
