Bruce Springsteen fails geography, wins audience
Bruce Springsteen reportedly greeted his Detroit-area audience Friday (11/13) night with a resounding "Hello, Ohio!" Oops.
After repeating the Ohio reference three times over the first half hour of the show, Springsteen caught his mistake with a whispered assist from Steven Van Zandt..
"I'm all right," Springsteen said about his mis-speak, according to the Detroit Free Press. "That is every front man's nightmare."
The Michigan audience apparently didn't mind the repeated geographical flub. After dropping in a selection of Detroit songs, Springsteen launched into a complete performance of his "Born to Run" album; during the title song, house lights were brought up for what the Free Press reviewer called "one of the many moments of rock communion with an adoring audience that seemed happy to forgive the Boss for his earlier road-weary brain fart."
Later, E Street Band guitarist Steven Van Zandt told Rolling Stone that he tried to catch Springsteen's attention after the first flub, but that The Boss repeated it two more times before he could catch his attention.
"I'm like, 'Please, God, don't give him a chance to do it again before I get a chance to talk to him,'" Van Zandt said. "Sure enough, he did it a third time and I'm like, 'That's it. This crowd is about to rebel. They're going to attack us!'"
