CD Review: Eels, "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" (Vagrant)

Imagine knowing everything about someone. That's sort of what the listening to the Eels ' sprawling, two-disc, 33-track "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" feels like.

Every facet of lead man Mark "E" Everett's psyche is revealed. From his quirky, novelty-loving disposition to the mercurial, break-beat rocker dude, to his melancholic, mortality-obsessed side--they're all here.

"Trouble With Dreams" recalls the bluesy beats of "Souljacker," while "Marie Floating Over the Backyard," is an instrumental with sparse piano and choral hymns. Everything else fits between these two extremes.

As its title suggests, "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" is meant to be an epic. And, yes, like other double albums, this one could certainly have been a more cohesive work had it been whittled down to, say, 20 tracks. Sometimes melodic, occasionally clunky, "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations" highlights Everett's boundless energy and creativity--warts and all.
