CD Review: The Offspring, "Splinter" (Columbia)

If you loved their 11-million-selling, breakthrough album "Smash," you'll dig the Offspring 's seventh release, "Splinter."

The new album has a lot of the humor that made radio-and-MTV staples of "Self Esteem" and "Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)," particularly on "The Worst Hangover Ever" ("Went out drinking late last night, I had a blast/But now the morning light has come and kicked my ass"). The real punch line is that it's a reggae tune.

"Spare Me the Details"--which opens with a funky "Low Rider"-style cowbell--follows suit with tales of infidelity after "seven shots of Jäger." There's no need to go into specifics about "When You're in Prison."

Much of the rest of the album's 12 tracks are in the familiar Orange County-punk mode, especially "The Noose," "Long Way Home," "(Can't Get My) Head Around You," and "Da Hui," which is slated to be the second single. The mid-tempo first single, "Hit That," features infectious guitar and synth lines that border on Smash Mouth territory.
