Craig Morgan explains 'Why'

Country singer Craig Morgan can't think of a bigger thrill than being inducted into the Grand Ole Opry.

"The induction, in my opinion, is one of the greatest honors that can be bestowed upon a country singer," Morgan said during an interview with LiveDaily. "It's beyond words. It's one of those things that I've wanted, and looked forward to it hopefully happening some day. I didn't expect it to happen this early in my career. But now that it has, I feel like I'm not worthy of it."

Morgan made his Grand Ole Opry debut on April 21, 2000, and was invited to become an Opry member during a special concert for US troops at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC, on Sept. 18, 2008. That evening was a homecoming of sorts for the singer, who was stationed at Fort Bragg from 1990 to 1992 during his 10-year active-duty tenure in the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division. When he stepped on the Nashville landmark's stage in October 2008 for the first time as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, he said it was both emotional and rewarding.

"To me, the Opry epitomizes what country music is," Morgan said. "It is the mother church. The Grand Ole Opry is definitely one of the cornerstones, foundation pieces of our format. To be considered a member of that is, in my opinion again, quite an honor."

Fans can see the Grand Ole Opry's new member as he tours throughout the US in support of his latest album "That's Why," his first for BNA Records. (Details for the tour are included below.)

Morgan is a Nashville native who has built his career with massive radio airplay of his signature hits, including: "Love Remembers," "Almost Home," "Redneck Yacht Club," "International Harvester" and "That's What I Love About Sunday," which was Billboard's Most Played Country Song of 2005. He has performed on the Grand Ole Opry more than 130 times, and plays more than 200 trconcerts a year. He lives just outside of Nashville with his wife Karen and their four children.

"One of the songs that I wrote was called 'That's Why,'" Morgan said while explaining the title of his current album. "It just talks about, 'That's why I get up in the morning and keep doing the things that I do.' It's about her, the kids and the family and the like. That's what the record's about--all of those things: the people, the reasons why I do what I do, the reason I act the way I act. Why I do all the things I do."

Morgan, who penned songs for other artists before embarking on his own career, co-wrote most of the songs on the album. He doesn't have a standard songwriting procedure. Instead, he writes "everywhere."

"I've had meetings, writing sessions where I go off with other writers and write," Morgan said. "I write on the road, just wherever it hits me, I guess. I was a songwriter first. So we kind of take advantage of the moments. But, like I said, I've also had sessions set up where I say, 'Tomorrow at 10 a.m. I'll meet you and we'll write.'"

Sometimes, planning to sit down and write can be difficult, he said, depending on the co-writer.

"It also depends on your mood," Morgan said. "A lot of times you can tell the type of mood the person's in by the song they write. I write about life, so it's really not that difficult, in my opinion. I just make stuff up about things that are happening."

Formerly signed to Broken Bow Records, Morgan is now signed to BNA Records, also the home to Kenny Chesney and Pat Green. He said being signed to BNA has enlightened him.

"It's like being in heaven for me, compared to where I've been," said Morgan, whose latest single is "God Must Really Love Me." "Not that the last place was terrible. There's just such a difference between a minor, where [I] and my management did everything but promotions--that was basically all they had. Now, I moved to a label that has everything in place, all the right relationships. It's really fun. I feel like I did when I signed my very first record deal. It's a lot of fun again."
