Deftones bassist seriously injured in car accident

Deftones bassist Chi Cheng was involved in car accident Monday night (11/5) in Santa Clara, CA, and reportedly is in a coma at a Northern California hospital.

The band's frontman, Chino Moreno, didn't reveal specifics of the accident, according to a Sacramento Bee report.

"I don't know everything that's going on--I just know it's very serious," Moreno told the newspaper. "I'm on my way to be with his family, I'm pretty freaked out about it."

On Wednesday morning (11/5), Warner Bros. Records, the band's label, released a statement that said Cheng is currently in intensive care. "His condition is serious but stable," the statement said. "Cheng's mother urges everyone to say a prayer for his recovery."

Further details about Cheng's condition weren't available, according to Warner. Bros, and members of the band and Cheng's family and friends "request privacy at this time."

Cheng, 38, was born in Davis, CA, and raised in Stockton, CA. The Deftones, who formed in Sacramento, CA, in 1988, had been at work on their sixth studio album, "Eros," which was expected to hit stores in Spring 2009.

"Chi is one of the strongest people I know, and I'm praying that his strength will get him through this," Moreno said in a statement on the Deftones' blog. "Please say a prayer for him as well."
