Devendra Banhart rolls down the road with new album

Indie folk singer Devendra Banhart has revealed the details for his forthcoming album, which he'll support with a six-week North American tour.

The set, "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon," is the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter's fifth studio effort and his second for XL Recordings, following 2005's "Cripple Crow." The new album is scheduled to hit US stores Sept. 25.

Banhart, who is fresh off a European tour, will hit the trail in North America beginning Sept. 1 in Vancouver. Following a performance at Seattle's Bumbershoot Festival the next day, Banhart and his band will headline theaters from coast to coast through mid-October.

"Smokey" co-producer and Banhart band member Noah Georgeson will open the first set of dates on the tour, followed by indie acts Rio En Medio, Matteah Baim, Jana Hunter and Hecuba, who will each have a turn. The itinerary is listed below; check local listings for specific opening acts.

Banhart spent the spring in a rustic hillside home in the Southern California bohemian enclave of Topanga recording "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon." The setting helped provide inspiration for the 16-song disc, which a press release describes as having "a nocturnal feel with performances that respectively evoke hushed, twilight atmospherics or boisterous, late night partying."

Earlier this week, Banhart officially released the album's first single, "Tonada Yanomaminista," via iTunes. A couple of other songs from the set are streaming at his website and MySpace page.
