Dinosaur Jr. heads back to 'Farm' for big fall outing
Alt-rockers Dinosaur Jr. will launch a massive fall headlining tour early next month in support of the band's ninth studio album, "Farm," which hit stores in June.
The group gets things underway Oct. 2 and 3 in Cambridge, MA. Four dates on the 27-city trek are co-headlining shows with Built to Spill; the remainder are headlining dates, with the exception of the tour-closing Nov. 21 New York City show with Sonic Youth. Details are included below.
The band's bassist, Lou Barlow, will open many of the tour's dates with his solo act, while Minutemen/Firehose/Stooges bassist Mike Watt's current road crew, The Missingmen, will add a second layer of support for most of the October shows. Additional info on opening acts and other ticketing information can be found at the Dinosaur Jr's website.
"Farm," the band's second studio album since returning from an almost 20-year layoff with 2007's "Beyond," surfaced in June. A deluxe edition adds four bonus tracks, including a cover of "Whenever You're Ready," which was originally recorded by '60s psychedelic pop band The Zombies.
"Beyond," the reunited trio's first recording together since 1988's "Bug," reached No. 4 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and No. 69 on The Billboard 200. Previous to "Beyond," the last studio album under the Dinosaur Jr. name was 1997's "Hand It Over," but that set was primarily recorded by singer/guitarist J Mascis.
The group's other original members--Barlow and drummer Murph--left in the late '90s as tensions between the bandmates grew. Barlow focused his attention on his other project, Sebadoh, and Mascis eventually retired the Dinosaur Jr. name to work as a solo artist under the name J Mascis and the Fog. The three original Dinosaur Jr. members got back together in 2005 to support the reissue of their first three albums, and the reunion stuck.
