DMX pleads guilty to multiple charges

DMX has agreed to a plea deal on animal cruelty, theft and drug charges, according to an Associated Press report.

The rapper, whose real name is Earl Simmons, pleaded guilty Tuesday (12/30) in Phoenix to one felony count of theft, one count each of felony possession of marijuana and a narcotic drug, and one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty.

DMX originally was arrested in August of 2007 after sheriff's deputies found three dead dogs, guns, ammunition and drug paraphernalia at his Phoenix-area home during an animal abuse investigation.

As part of the plea agreement, DMX cannot own any animals, possess firearms and must attend an animal-offender treatment program. If he violates probation, he could be spend more than 10 years in prison.

The felony theft charges stem from an April incident in which authorities allege DMX gave a false name and Social Security number when being treated at a Scottsdale hospital.

In May, sheriff's deputies and a SWAT team reportedly went to the rapper's home to serve arrest and search warrants on the earlier drug and animal cruelty charges. Simmons briefly barricaded himself in his bedroom before surrendering. Deputies said they found marijuana in his home.

DMX appeared in court handcuffed and wearing a black-and-white striped prison uniform. He is expected to receive a minimum 90-day jail sentence and probation. He reportedly will remain in the county jail until his Jan. 30 sentencing and is not expected to receive credit for time served.
