Dolphins Stadium becomes Jimmy Buffett namesake
Miami's Dolphins Stadium became Land Shark Stadium today (5/8) as hundreds of dancing fins and parrotheads celebrated alongside namesake Jimmy Buffett and Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.
The name change--which is the stadium's fifth since opening in 1987--is the result of a partnership between Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville enterprise and the Miami football team.
"What a cool thing to be doing especially at home in South Florida," the laid-back singer said in a prepared statement. "I am honored and look forward to working (not that hard) with the Dolphin organization. I just want to thank Steve for having the idea to think a little out of the box and including us in his vision of more fun for the fans. All I can add is, let the Fin begin!"
Best known for his vacation anthem "Margaritaville," Buffett penned a new song, "Fins," expressly for the team and fellow Dolphins fans. The singer performed the new song, as well as two other songs, at this morning's event.
Buffett, who last released "Take the Weather With You" in 2006, has more than 30 albums dating back to the early 1970s in his career catalog.
