Bo Diddley [ tickets ] was honored Friday (6/5) night when the city of Gainesville, FL, unveiled a new mural to commemorate the recently-renamed Bo Diddley Community Plaza, according to the Gainesville Sun. Artist Robby Rucker presented the painting in front of hundreds of residents including many from the town of Archer, where Diddley lived.

Several of Diddley's family members were on hand for the official ceremony, which kicked off a weekend of events in honor of the late musical legend. Diddley's grandson, Garry Mitchell, addressed the crowd, thanking the city for honoring his grandfather. "The love that you've shown throughout his career ... it meant a lot because it kept him here, and it kept a whole lot of us here," Mitchell was quoted as saying. Diddley's daughter Evelyn Kelly also spoke, along with Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan and Commissioner Rodney Long.

In appreciation for its recognition, Diddley's family presented the city a with guitar once played by Diddley.

Celebrations continued through the weekend in Archer with a special exhibit of Diddley memorabilia at the Depot Museum. On Sunday (6/7), his family traveled to Bronson to unveil a tombstone at Diddley's final resting place.
