Glen Phillips plots solo shows, album with new band
Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips has lined up fall tour dates as he supports his most recent solo EP and a forthcoming album with his new alt-folk supergroup.
The California-based singer/songwriter kicks off the run Oct. 11 in Ann Arbor, MI, and the 26-city trek rambles through parts of three months, winding down in early December. Dates are below.
"The Secrets of the New Explorers," released in January, follows Phillips' most recent full-length studio set, 2006's "Mr. Lemons." The EP, which explores themes of space and science fiction, is available only through Phillips' website, digital retailers and at the singer's live appearances.
Phillips' new project, the fledgling supergroup Works Progress Administration, features brother and sister Sean and Sara Watkins from Nickel Creek on guitar and fiddle, respectively, keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, fiddler Luke Bulla, multi-instrumentalist Greg Leisz, drummer Pete Thomas (of various Elvis Costello backing units, including The Attractions and The Imposters) and bassist Davey Faragher of Cracker and The Imposters.
The group plans to release its debut album early next year. Three tracks from the still-untitled set are already streaming on the band's website.
