Lyle Lovett maps summer dates with his Large Band
Lyle Lovett will take his Large Band on the road with him this spring and summer for a round of dates across the Western and Midwestern states.
The multiple-Grammy-winner, who recently completed another co-headlining trek with blues-rock veteran John Hiatt, will play a few shows in May with his Acoustic Band, kicking off May 19 in Billings, MT, before launching into a second leg of dates July 14 in Memphis, TN, with the Large Band. Lovett currently has shows lined up through mid-August; dates are below.
Lovett's 13th album, "It's Not Big It's Large," surfaced in 2007, reaching No. 18 on The Billboard 200 and No. 2 on the Top Country Albums chart. The 12-track set features Lovett's signature Large Band and covers everything from country to blues, to folk, jazz and gospel. A deluxe version of the album including a DVD with studio footage is also available. A few song samples are streaming at the performer's MySpace page.
"We've always done arrangements that border on blues music, that border on jazz arrangements, that border on what folks might think of as 'big band,' but we don't really play big band music," Lovett said of the album's title in a promotional video clip posted at Amazon.com. "But we've always had a lot of people in the band, so that's why I call the band the 'Large Band' and not the 'Big Band.' But invariably people refer to the band as the 'Big Band' and ... it's not big ... you get the idea."
"Its Not Big It's Large" follows Lovett's Lost Highway Records debut, "My Baby Don't Tolerate," which surfaced in 2003. That set marked his first collection of original material since 1996's "Road to Ensenada."
