Medeski Martin & Wood ready 'Radiolarian' box set
Medeski Martin & Wood will release the three albums of their "Radiolarian Series" in a box set on Nov. 24, according to a press release. "Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set" will include "Radiolarians I," "II" and "III" complete with bonus tracks, a 10-track disc of remixed music, a previously unreleased live album, a double-vinyl LP set, and a DVD feature film, "Fly In a Bottle," directed by Billy Martin.
MMW produced the two-year "Radiolarian Series" to help subvert the write/record/tour cycle commonly followed in the music business. Instead, the trio convened for brief writing retreats, performed only that new material on tour and recorded the material immediately after getting off the road. The band repeated the processes three times while touring in different regions of the US and South America. The three original albums were released over the course of the past year.
The new box set compiles the three "Radiolarians" albums in the same package for the first time, and the-double vinyl LP set features a selection of songs from the albums hand picked by MMW. The accompanying 70-minute live release was recorded during the "Radiolarians" tours.
For the 10-track remix CD, MMW enlisted the creative talents of several DJs and producers, including Dan The Automator, DJ Spooky, DJ Logic, DJ Olive and Scott Harding.
The "finale" to the box set is the Martin-directed feature film, which provides an intimate portrait of the band working in the studio and on the road, highlighting the trio's intricate relationships with each other and with the music they have created over the past 19 years as a recording and touring band, according to the press release. The DVD also will include the music video for "Amber Gris," the esoteric "Incant to Chantes Des Femmes" (directed by Grey Gersten), and an experiment with time-lapse film entitled "CW."
The time-lapse film, directed again by Martin, is described by the band as a metaphoric look at the evolving and intricate relationship between Chris Wood and John Medeski from Martin's perspective. "CW," which was filmed on the tour bus," is set to the music of "First Light" and features excerpts of transistor radio as used in "Chasen v. Suribachi."
