Live Review: Pink in Glendale, AZ
Pink , still reeling from a recent shoulder injury, showed no signs of slowing down during her circus-themed Sunday (9/20) performance at Glendale, AZ's Jobing.com Arena. Keeping the stunts to a minimum to protect her shoulder, she still presented one of the best rock shows of the summer season.
The energetic, yet tired-looking, singer was a dynamic presence. The platinum-haired beauty fully utilized the stage, complete with a catwalk that jutted out nearly halfway through the main floor. She slid down slides from the two-story stage, with the help of dancers. And she kept the choreography simple to allow her shoulder time to heal.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for coming to play with me tonight," Pink said early in the show. "I separated my shoulder last week. If you guys are loud, I can't feel anything."
The two-hour show was a barrage of hits. She kicked off the show by singing AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" from behind a curtain, as a film clip of her riding a motorcycle loomed overhead. Wearing an apropos ringmaster dress, Pink popped out of a catwalk like a jack-in-the-box to "Bad Influence." With a harness around her leg, she flew from the catwalk to the main stage.
Pink asked the audience to sing along to "Who Knew?" an invitation that came a little too late, as the crowd was already doing so.
"You all gotta sing so I can hear you," Pink said. "That's better," she added when the crowd sang louder.
"U + Ur Hand" was the highlight of the show, with Pink and her background dancers wearing gloves adorned with lights. Her vocals were powerful and her dancing amazing for someone who was injured. "So What" was a crowd favorite as the near-capacity building literally shook from the numbers of people jumping during the chorus.
The fast-paced show wasn't all upbeat. The intimate ballad about her broken family, "Family Portrait," was touching, but Pink was quick to make fun of it when the song was over.
"That was nice and happy," she said. After that, she encouraged the crowd to "channel their inner dark clown" for "I Don't Believe You." Curiously, she added, "I sound like Erica Clapton now."
"Highway to Hell" wasn't the only cover. She also performed a slow, sultry rendition of "I Touch Myself" by The Divinyls while writhing on a chaise lounge as hands protruded from holes in the sofa and touched her seductively; and a very convincing version of Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"--one that would leave the classic rockers impressed. For Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," she donned a jacket similar to that which Freddy Mercury would have worn circa the "Magic" tour. Near the end of the show, she pulled Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" out of her hat of tricks.
At one point during Pink's show, she admitted she wasn't sure that anyone was going to show up to her concerts this fall. At this particular show, the upper level was opened to allow for increasing demand.
"I've waited 30 years for this tour. I really wasn't sure if anyone was going to show."
