Sonic Youth postpones shows after guitarist's injury
Sonic Youth has been forced to postpone or cancel several fall concert appearances following news of guitarist Lee Ranaldo's fractured left wrist.
The injury--which Ranaldo suffered while playing tennis, according to the band--will shuffle five of the group's upcoming Southwest US dates to January. The rescheduled outing will kick off Jan. 4 in Tucson, AZ, with additional shows in Phoenix, San Diego, Los Angeles and Pomona, CA. Details are below.
The group's scheduled Sept. 26 performance in Santa Barbara, CA, will not be rescheduled, and the postponements will also quash the group's plans to play an Oct. 4 slot at the Austin City Limits Festival in Austin, TX. Refunds for the Santa Barbara show will be available at the point of purchase. Full ticketing information can be found at the band's website.
The postponements will not affect the group's upcoming international dates, or several East Coast shows set for late November.
Sonic Youth continues to support "The Eternal," the group's vaunted return to the indie world, which surfaced in June. Produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Drive-By Truckers), the album is the band's first effort for the Matador label after recording nine albums for Geffen, beginning with 1990's "Goo." The new set also marks the debut of former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold as a permanent, full-time member of the group.
"We've not had a record in our recent history that's been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation," Matador's Gerard Cosloy said in a February press statement officially announcing the album. "Suffice to say, we're pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs."
The band's previous release, "Rather Ripped," surfaced in 2006.
