Static-X's frontman finds his muse

Wayne Static is a happy man. Last year, the Static-X vocalist/guitarist married Tera Wray, and that union has inspired his metal band's latest collection, "Cult of Static."

"Happiness really brings out the best in life," Static said during a phone interview with LiveDaily. "I would disagree that sadness makes it easier to write songs. I think maybe that works for some people. It doesn't work for me. I like to have a good time. That's what sets us apart from a lot of other metal bands, too. A lot of metal bands are p---ed off. You go to their shows and they're all angry and preaching to the crowd about how everything sucks. It's like, that's not us. I love life. I love my job. I have the best job in the world. I get to go out and rock and make people happy every night. We like to go out and a have a party every night on stage. For us, it's all about good vibes.

"That's why we're still around. You can't buy into the whole fame thing. We're still regular people. We just happen to have the best job in the world. You just have to stay humble, do your job and have a great time."

Fans can feel those vibes when Static-X, along with Saliva, Burn Halo and The Flood, hit their town as part of the Sno Core 2009 tour, which got underway last week. During the jaunt, Static-X will play a good chunk of the "Cult of Static" album, which hit stores March 17.

"I worked really hard on it," Static said of the album. "We recorded it differently, as far as locations. We did all the vocals at my house and a lot of the guitar tracks at my house. I wrote the whole thing at my house. A lot of it was done at home. So I guess that part of it is different. The process itself was pretty standard for what we do. Working at home allows you to really take your time and not feel any pressure and work when you want to work, and work when you're inspired to work."

One segment of the album that was not recorded in Static's home was the guest appearance by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine on a new version of "Lunatic," a song that originally appeared on the "Punisher: War Zone" movie soundtrack.

"I just asked him," Static said about the way in which the appearance came about. "We've done a couple tours with him. The final tour we did on the last tour cycle happened to be with Megadeth in Australia. I just asked him if he wanted to do it. He said, 'Yeah, it sounds like fun.' So we recorded the track, went down to his studio in San Diego, spent a few hours working on his solo and had a good time. It's an honor to have someone like him on the record. He's a f---in' guitar hero, guitar God, whatever you want to call it. It's absolutely amazing. I've been listening to Megadeth since I was a kid. To have him on the record is f----ing awesome."

The first single, "Stingwray," was inspired by Static's wife and the Corvette Stingray she drives. The song's powerful beats and heavy guitar riffs make it song a commanding force on the record.

"It's one of my favorite tracks on the record," Static said. "It's a very dark song but yet very catchy. I think it's got a lot of power to it. I wrote that song for my wife, having a great time with my wife. It's a little play on words. I got her a Stingray for her wedding gift and I thought it would be fun to call it Stingwray because her name is Tara Wray, well, now Tara Wray Static."

His favorite song on the album, however, is "Tera-fied," another song written for his wife.

"I believe it is the first song that I completed for the record and really set the tone for everything," Static said. "I just really love all the layering and the dynamics of the whole track. I love the hypnotic feel to it. It's our 'Kashmir', if you will--not to compare us to the greatness of Led Zeppelin. But it's that type of track. It's very hypnotic and flowing, but very heavy and Static-X at the same time."
