String Cheese Incident plots farewell tour
Veteran jam band The String Cheese Incident has announced dates for its final tour, including an extended farewell in the band's home state of Colorado.
The 14-year-old group will call it quits at the end of the summer tour season, a move that follows last November's announcement that guitarist and principal member Billy Nershi would be leaving "to pursue other musical projects," according to the band's website.
"Presently, there are no plans for The String Cheese Incident beyond summer of 2007," the group wrote on its website recently. "The band would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our friends and fans for all your support."
The band will end its career close to where it began, with a three-night stand at Morrison, CO's Red Rocks Amphitheatre running Aug. 10-12. The trek will kick off June 15 with a slot at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, TN. Additional dates are listed below.
The group will participate in one final version of its "Big Summer Classic," a single-location version of a traveling festival the band helped create in 2005. This year's version will run Aug. 3-5 in Salem, MO, and will feature performances from Los Lobos, The Wailers, Yonder Mountain String Band and many others. More information can be found at the event's website.
The String Cheese Incident formed in Crested Butte, CO, in 1993, at which time the group played local gigs at ski resorts in exchange for free lift tickets. In addition to Nershi (guitars), the band's lineup features Michael Kang (mandolin, violin), Michael Travis (drums, percussion), Kyle Hollingsworth (keys), Keith Moseley (bass) and Jason Hann (percussion).
The group issued all of its albums on its own SCI Fidelity indie label, beginning with 1996's "Born on the Wrong Planet." Its most recent studio set is last year's "One Step Closer."
