Tenacious D assume Beastie Boys' Outside Lands headlining spot
Tenacious D will take over the Sunday-night headlining spot formerly held by the Beastie Boys at San Francisco's Outside Lands Festival, now just a little more than three weeks away.
The rain-or-shine event, slated for Aug. 28-30 at Golden Gate Park, will feature more than 60 acts on six stages, including Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band , Modest Mouse, Incubus and Black Eyed Peas. The complete list of performers is included below.
"It's a thrill and an honor and we're going to close it out," Tenacious D frontman Jack Black said in a conference call with reporters today (8/6). "I just want to say one thing: If there are any dogs barking on the day of Aug. 30 before we go on, don't be alarmed. That's just them sensing the earthquake of rock that's coming."
The Beastie Boys pulled out of the festival, as well as the rest of their concert commitments, last month when doctors found a cancerous tumor in Adam "MCA" Yauch's left salivary gland. Yauch released a statement yesterday (8/5) saying he is recovering from surgery and is preparing to undergo radiation treatment in a few weeks.
The Beastie Boys also postponed the Sept. 15 release of "Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 1," the trio's eighth studio set, indefinitely.
"The Beastie Boys are good friends of ours," Black continued on the call. "We went on the road with them to support Barack Obama and I think there are more similarities than differences when you put us together."
"The Pick of Destiny," Tenacious D's sophomore album, surfaced in 2006. Black mentioned recently recording a new single, "Deth Starr," which Tenacious D might perform at the festival.
Dave Matthews, whose band will headline the second night of the festival (8/29), also spoke to journalists by phone today (8/6).
"I hope and think that Adam [Yauch] will be fine," the jam band frontman said. "I think the Beastie Boys remain connected to their fans, because they have a level of honesty and humor and musical celebration about them and it's hard not to get turned on by that."
Three-day passes and single day tickets for Outside Lands Festival are still available via Ticketmaster. (LiveDaily is an operating unit of Ticketmaster Entertainment, which also owns Ticketmaster.)
