Allman Brothers get back to the Beacon
After having to postpone last year's annual New York City residency, The Allman Brothers Band has firmed up dates for its 2009 Beacon Theatre run, which will double as the launch party for the group's 40th-anniversary festivities.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are set to perform 10 shows at the newly renovated Beacon Theatre beginning March 9 and, as usual, many special guests will join in on the fun. The itinerary is listed below and ticket information will be available by mid-month.
The Allman Brothers, who have played the Beacon 175 times since 1989, were forced to bow out of last March's planned 15-show residency because lead vocalist/keyboardist Gregg Allman was recuperating from Hepatitis C treatments. He was well enough to resume the group's touring schedule in the fall and tackle a subsequent solo jaunt that runs through next week.
"I feel great," Allman said in a statement between tours and after doctors pronounced him free of the disease. "We did about 20 shows this summer and we were really hitting it."
The Allman Brothers Band's fall outing marked the group's return to the road following an 11-month hiatus, and all 23 performances are available on CD through ABB's website.
The rockers--Allman, drummer/tympani player Butch Trucks, drummer Jaimoe, vocalist/guitarist Warren Haynes, guitarist Derek Trucks, bassist Oteil Burbridge and percussionist Marc Quinones--were honored in November with Billboard's Legend of Live Award. In accepting the trophy, Allman said, "We'll keep coming back until we can't come back no more."
As for The Allman Brothers Band's 40th anniversary bash, the performer recently told Billboard, "I'd love to tell you what we have planned ... but it's just kick-ass; that's all I can tell you."
