The Cult maps out spring travel plans

Reborn rockers The Cult have lined up a mostly Canadian headlining tour later this spring that finds the group continuing to back its first studio album in six years.

The band kicks off and ends the trek in US cities, opening March 25 in Seattle, with an April 18 date in Boston concluding the run. All other destinations on the 14-city trek fall north of the Canadian border. Dates are listed below.

Led by longtime core members Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar), the band is working the road behind last October's comeback album, "Born Into This," The Cult's first collection of new material since 2001's "Beyond Good and Evil." The set features the cut "Dirty Little Rockstar," which was featured in a recent episode of the new CBS drama "Cane."

During the band's long hiatus, Astbury stayed busy working with original Doors members Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek; the trio--known as Riders on the Storm--mounted a number of tours performing material originally recorded by The Doors.

Astbury told LiveDaily in an interview last year that he didn't consider making a new album an automatic feature of The Cult's return to active group status.

"I just think it's pointless making a record if you have nothing to say, really," the singer said. "There are so many bad records being made. That's because people are making records and they've got nothing to say.

"In an arc of lifespan, [creativity] comes to a grinding halt after awhile. You're going to go away, travel and reinvent yourself, and have experiences and all that. You're going to accumulate a watershed of stuff and energy; then you got something to say. It's pretty much the reason why."
