The Dead expand run, auction tickets for charity
The Dead , who have filled out their spring itinerary with a few more US dates, have announced plans to auction off the shows' front-row seats for charity.
The outing has expanded to 22 shows since last check, kicking off April 12 in Greensboro, NC and wrapping up May 16 at Quincy, WA's The Gorge. Two-night stands in Worchester, MA; East Rutherford, NJ; Chicago, IL; and Mountain View, CA, are also on the books. More details are below.
The iconic rockers selected the best seats in the house to auction off. Tickets will go up on charityfolks.com and bidding will begin at $250 each. The highest bidder won't receive the winning ticket until the day of the performance to help minimize scalping, according to a press release.
Proceeds from the online sales will benefit several charities, including the Grateful Dead-established Rex Foundation, which provides grants supporting the arts, science, education and other areas. Other charities expected to benefit from the money raised include the Unbroken Chain Foundation, supporting community-service projects; the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, dedicated to protecting marine life; and the Further Foundation, which supports environmental and social issues. The band hopes to raise at least $250,000 for their designated charities.
The Dead, who dropped Grateful from the moniker after the 1995 death of guitarist Jerry Garcia, consists of original members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. The upcoming spring run marks the first tour in five years for the reunited bandmates.
