Thomas Dolby hits road with new EP

Thomas Dolby continues to march with increasing confidence on the comeback trail, as the tech-pop master pairs a September tour with the release of a new live EP.

The synth-pop veteran, best known for his mid-'80s hits "She Blinded Me with Science" and "Hyperactive," will hook up once again with The Jazz Mafia horn section (which consists of San Francisco jazz players Adam Theis on trombone, Rich Armstrong on trumpet and Ron Cohen on tenor sax) for his next run of shows, kicking off with a Sept. 11 date in Londonderry, NH.

The 14-city trek will be Dolby's second live collaboration this year with the jazz trio, who also appear on the performer's new EP, "Thomas Dolby & the Jazz Mafia Horns: Live @ SXSW," recorded during Dolby's March performance at the SXSW music festival in Austin, TX. The five-track EP includes four Dolby originals and a cover of George Clinton's "Hot Sauce."

"Over the years I've employed, sampled and synthesized brass on many of my more up-tempo tunes, but I've rarely had the opportunity to jam with live horn players," Dolby said in a press statement. "It seemed to me that the inherent rigidity of my electronica might be nicely offset by the looseness and liveness of real brass, so I got with the Jazz Mafia and worked out new arrangements of some of my tunes."

Dolby returned to the road last year after a 15-year hiatus from the music business. In November, he released a CD and DVD, both titled "The Sole Inhabitant," capturing live performances from his comeback tour. The packages were released on Dolby's own label and are available via his website as well as CDbaby and iTunes. They feature live versions of some of his past hits, including the aforementioned pair of chart-toppers.

The new EP--which is available as a digital download through online music services and will be sold at tour stops, but not traditional music retailers--features one new song, "Your Karma Hit my Dogma," which comments on Dolby's recent legal action against erstwhile rapper Kevin Federline, in which the latter admitted to using samples of Dolby's work on one of his own songs without permission. The case was settled out of court for an undisclosed amount of money, according to a press release.
