Yes--minus Jon Anderson--gears up for winter trek
Prog-rock icons Yes have laid out plans for the second leg of their "In the Present" tour featuring stand-in vocalist Benoit David.
The 17-city outing is set to kick off Feb. 5 with a two-night stand in Del. Cuauhtemoc, Mexico, and then hit US clubs and theaters from the South to the West Coast, with a stop in Vancouver. The full itinerary is listed below.
On the road, Yes will play its stable of hits, including "Roundabout," "Owner of a Lonely Heart" and "I've Seen All Good People," as well as rarely performed chestnuts like 1980's "Machine Messiah" and "Siberian Khatru," according to a press release, which adds that the tunes are "expertly sung by David, a Montreal, Quebec, native and vocalist in several Yes tribute bands."
David took the reins from Yes vocalist Jon Anderson after the star frontman suffered a severe asthma attack and was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure. The illness forced the band to cancel its 40th anniversary summer tour. Shortly thereafter, the remaining members of Yes' most commercially successful lineup--bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Allan White--announced they would hit the road with David, whom they discovered on the Internet.
"This isn't an attempt to replace Jon Anderson because, as we all know, that would be impossible," Squire reiterated in a press release. "Benoit has proven to be a talented singer, which has enabled us to present the music of Yes for fans who have waited almost four years to see us perform."
Anderson took the news as a slap in the face, saying he felt disappointed that his bandmates weren't willing to wait for him to recover.
"And I feel very disrespected, having spent most of this year creating songs and constant ideas for the band, spending time with [artist] Roger Dean creating a stage design, also working with VH1 and Sirius and XM Radio to help promote the welfare of Yes," Anderson said in a September blog posting at his website. "This is not Yes on tour."
Yes has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide during its 40-year career, according to a press release. The British quintet released its 17th and most recent studio album, "Magnification," in 2001.
