Progressive bluegrass trio Nickel Creek has just announced its spring tour, which takes the band all over the US in April and May.
Dates begin April 12 in Savannah, GA, and wrap May 12 in Salt Lake City, UT, with multiple shows in Texas, Arizona and California along the way. The band has been tapped to play both of concert promoter Goldenvoice's massive desert festivals in Indio, CA: Coachella April 27 and the inaugural Stagecoach fest May 5. Nickel Creek also has Colorado's Four Corners Folk Festival on the books Sept. 2. Details are listed below.
Apparently, Nickel Creek's tour dates this year will be their last for a while. In August, the group members told Billboard that after seven straight years of touring, they plan to part ways indefinitely to focus on individual projects.
Mandolin player Chris Thile is currently on the road with his solo project, Chris Thile & The How to Grow a Band, through mid-March. Those dates are listed at Nickel Creek's website. The sibling team of guitarist Sean Watkins and violinist Sara Watkins have their side group, The Watkins Family Hour, and also have plans to branch out on their own.
Nickel Creek released its third Sugar Hill Records album, "Why Should the Fire Die?," in August 2005. The set, produced by Eric Valentine (Smash Mouth, Third Eye Blind), was nominated for a Grammy, as was the cut "Scotch and Chocolate." A few songs from the album are streaming at Nickel Creek's MySpace page, along with the band's live parody of Britney Spears' "Toxic."
In November, Nickel Creek released a best-of CD/DVD set titled "Reasons Why: The Very Best," which includes 14 tracks and seven videos.
