Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Martin Sexton just released his seventh album, "Seeds," and is supporting the set with a spring tour of the US.
The outing, which his publicist says is Sexton's fastest-selling trek to date, launches Thursday (4/5) in Philadelphia, and takes the singer/songwriter from coast to coast and back again. Dates are nearly sold out in most cities, including Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis and NYC, where the native-New Yorker will play his largest venue to date in that market, the Nokia Theatre, according to a press release. Shows are listed below.
Sexton, who recently returned from his first UK jaunt, will travel with a four-piece band and feature many of the unorthodox instruments used on "Seeds," including a water jug, minnow bucket and AM radio. He will also make the run a "green tour," using a bio-diesel bus and tie-ins with several eco-conscious sponsors, a press release said.
"Seeds" combines sounds ranging from gospel to country to blues, rock and pop. Guest artist Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band lends his lap steel to the western-swing tune "How Far I've Come," and one-man jam band Keller Williams plucks his Dobro on "Goin To The Country." One of the album's tracks, "Happy," is streaming at Sexton's MySpace page.
"Seeds," Sexton's second release on his own Kitchen Table Records, was recently the No. 1 most added at Triple A Radio, according to trade magazine FMQB. The musician's success comes despite his rejection of major labels that have come calling. Sexton previously recorded for Atlantic Records but asked to be released from his contract, according to his bio. He launched Kitchen Table in 2002 with his first live, double-CD set, "Live Wide Open."
