Boredoms schedule spring shows in the round

Japanese noise-rockers Boredoms return to the US this spring with a rare treat for their small but dedicated fanbase, appearing on select nights in an "in the round" format.

The avant-garde act kicks off its first extended US tour in several years March 15 in San Diego, CA; dates follow in 10 additional cities through early April, winding down with an April 3 show in Washington, DC. Dates are below.

The band's San Francisco (3/18), Minneapolis (3/25) and New York City (3/30) appearances will feature the band performing "in the round," with the audience completely surrounding the group as it performs.

The band's most recent studio album was 2004's "Seadrum/House of Sun," originally released on Warner Music Japan, and released the following year in the US on the group's current label, Vice Records. The disc consists of just two tracks, each lasting more than 20 minutes.

Last July, the group brought together 77 drummers for an event held under the Brooklyn Bridge entitled "Boadrum 77." According to live-music site jambase.com, nominal frontman Yamatsuka Eye "conducted and accompanied with vocals, distortion effects and a couple bizarre instruments that consisted of four guitar necks stacked horizontally which he hit with a rod in a manner reminiscent of Zeus and his lightning bolts."

In recent interviews, Eye has mentioned the possibility of putting together a similar event on Aug. 8 this year involving 88 drummers.
