According to Tiger Army lead singer Nick 13, it seems that barely any time has passed since longtime stand-up bass player Geoff Kresge left the psychobilly band. Now that he has returned, it's clear he was missed.
"I think there's definitely a unique chemistry and he and I have," Nick 13 said during an interview with LiveDaily. "We've been playing music together on and off since 1991, when we were just young kids. I think there's almost an intuition there between what we're doing on stage. We don't even need to see each other."
Kresge left the band amicably in 2004, the same year it toured with Social Distortion.
"He had some other things that he needed to do in his life at the time," Nick 13 said vaguely. "Circumstances have kind of come full circle and it was time for him to come back."
Kresge has returned just in time for a major world tour. Tiger Army recently wrapped up a US tour, and is headed to Australia and Japan in March, followed by Europe in April. Another North American jaunt will follow. Also, plans are in motion to film a video in February for "Pain," the second single from "Music From Regions Beyond."
"Music From Regions Beyond" has been Tiger Army's most successful album since forming in 1995. In 2007, the band served as one of the Vans Warped Tour's headliners.
"I think it's something that's been building for a long time," Nick 13 said about his band's popularity. "Each album we've done has generated more excitement and I think it finally just reached the tipping point. We've existed for several years with a fairly large fan base, but it's been underground with very little press and no airplay. With a successful radio single and things like playing "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," that's slowly starting to change. I do think producer Jerry Finn helped us make our best-sounding record to date and that it's our strongest collection of songs, so that didn't hurt of course."
Finn, who's produced records for artists such as AFI, Morrissey and Rancid, is a "historian with a great ear and great techniques for getting incredible tone," Nick 13 explained.
"He let me in on a few of his tricks, but I'm sworn to secrecy. Jerry's an amazing producer. I couldn't be happier with the job he did on this new album. Sonically, there's no question that he helped take the band to a new level on the record."
So, with a successful 2007 in the books, how will 2008 match up?
"Well, stuff always keep evolving," Nick 13 said. "Certainly, Geoff Kresge being back adds sort of a freshness and a newness to the performance. But there's still stuff we're getting into [from] the new record that we haven't played yet. We're getting back into some of the older stuff as well. For me, rotating the setlist is what keeps it fresh. If there's a song I don't feel like playing, we just don't do play it. A couple of tours, a year or a few years go by, I can get to the point where I really enjoy playing the song. I like to keep as much of the set in that place as possible."
