Flaming Lips' summer plans involve festivals, film screenings

The Flaming Lips will hit the festival trail this summer, and will also premiere their long-awaited "Christmas on Mars" film at a couple of upcoming events.

The group will kick off the outdoor fest season with a May 23 appearance at Chillicothe, IL's Summer Camp Music Festival. Spread out over three days (5/23-25), the event also features moe., O.A.R. and the reborn Blind Melon.

The Oklahomans will travel to Quincy, WA, for a May 26 appearance at the Sasquatch! Festival, one of two events where the band will screen the new film; the other screening will take place June 14 at Manchester, TN's Bonnaroo festival, an event that will not otherwise involve the band.

Written and directed by Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne, "Christmas on Mars" features all of the band's members, along with guest appearances from several famous friends (including singer/songwriter and former "Blue's Clues" host Steve Burns, actor Adam Goldberg, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, and comedian Fred Armisen).

The group's complete North American schedule is included below.

In 2006, The Flaming Lips released their 12th studio album, "At War With the Mystics," which earned the group Grammy awards for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the track "The Wizard Turns On ...."

The band plans to re-enter the studio soon to begin recording the follow-up to "Mystics" with long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann, according to a press release.
