Alt-rock eccentrics The Flaming Lips have nailed down plans for their second annual Halloween celebration, set for Oct. 25 this year in the band's Oklahoma City hometown.
Fans who wish to participate in the Lips' "March of 1000 Flaming Skeletons" parade--featuring "(in)appropriately adorned cars, walking groups and plenty of surprises along with 1,000 strong undead," according to a press release--can register at the group's website.
Paid registrants will receive a package including a reserved spot in the parade, plus an "exclusive Death March branded Skeleton costume," a torch, and a limited-edition T-shirt, according the band. The parade will take place in the city's Bricktown District, near Flaming Lips Alley, the street that began bearing the group's name in 2006.
In other Lips news, the band finally will release its long-anticipated film debut, "Christmas on Mars: A Fantastical Film Freak-out Featuring the Flaming Lips," on DVD Nov. 11, according to a press release.
The film, which will be available as a single DVD and a deluxe DVD/CD package that includes the movie and the 12-track original film score, was written and directed by Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne, and features all of the band's members, along with guest appearances from several famous friends (including singer/songwriter and former "Blue's Clues" host Steve Burns, actor Adam Goldberg, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse and comedian Fred Armisen).
A digital-download version of the movie will also be available for purchase at Apple's iTunes Music Store.
"Christmas on Mars" also is being screened at offbeat venues across the country, such as rock clubs, stage theaters, museums and select movie theaters, including its continued New York City engagement at the KGB Complex's Kraine Theater. A list of dates and venues can be found at the bands MySpace page.
In June, Coyne told the UK's BBC6 radio that the band had started work on a follow-up to its most recent album, 2006's "At War with the Mystics," and that "some of it sounds like John Lennon but if he got together with Miles Davis and they went back in time, but there was a supercomputer that they could figure out how to work!"
