California concert pays tribute to Steinbeck, Guthrie

Sheryl Crow , The Black Keys , Cat Power and Henry Rollins are among the artists scheduled to appear Sept. 20 at Sleep Train Pavilion in Concord, CA, as part of a tribute to John Steinbeck, Woody Guthrie and the American Spirit, according to a press release.

The "This Land Is Your Land," concert--the first major event to celebrate the legacies of both Steinbeck and Guthrie--also will feature appearances by the Mike Ness Band, Son Volt and Guthrie's granddaughter Sarah Lee Guthrie, who will perform with her husband, Steinbeck's great nephew Johnny Irion.

In addition to the live performances, the event will feature an exhibit showcasing historical artifacts and rare video footage from the Steinbeck and Guthrie archives.

Items from the Steinbeck archives will include signed first editions of his novels and copies of private correspondence between Steinbeck and historical and literary figures including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Also on display will be original one sheets from movies based on Steinbeck novels including "The Grapes of Wrath," "Viva Zapata," "The Wayward Bus" and more.

Artifacts from Guthrie archives will include original lyrics--including "Dust Bowl Ballads"--artwork and photographs.

Concertgoers are being encouraged to bring with them non-perishable food items, which will benefit the Food Bank of Contra Costa.

A portion of the ticket proceeds will benefit the John Steinbeck and Woody Guthrie family foundations, organizations intent on preserving the manuscripts and materials of, and educating the public about the literary and music icons.
