Featured Photos: The Tibet House Benefit Concert, Carnegie Hall, New York, NY - Feb. 3, 2009
New York City's Carnegie Hall hosted the 19th Annual Tibet House Benefit Concert, headlined by Patti Smith , on Tuesday night (2/3). The stellar lineup also included Steve Earle , Angelique Kidjo, Keb' Mo' , Vampire Weekend , The National , and the Lhasa Spirits, and featured Philip Glass as the event's musical director.
The sold-out show no doubt thrilled the organization's president Robert Thurman (Uma Thurman's dad), since the aim of The Tibet House US is to raise funds to help preserve and promote the threatened culture of Tibet.
Some of the highlights of the show: Patti Smith taking the stage with her daughter Jesse Smith on piano, Steve Earle singing "God Is God"--a tune written for Joan Baez, interjecting, "I have a pretty great job!"; and the finale featuring Patti Smith and her band playing a rendition of The Four Tops' "Reach Out," which brought the audience to its feet. Smith closed the show with her classic "People Have the Power."
