Artists pay tribute to R.E.M. with Big Apple concert
More than 20 musicians will converge on New York City's Carnegie Hall next week to honor legendary alt-rock outfit R.E.M.
Calexico will sit in as the house band for the March 11 tribute while artists such as Ingrid Michaelson , Glen Hansard , Patti Smith , Bob Mould , Rhett Miller and Dar Williams perform hits from R.E.M.'s extensive catalog. More acts are expected to join the roster in the coming days, and tickets, which range in price from $38-$275, are available on the event's website.
All of the net proceeds will go to one of three organizations--The American Symphony Orchestra, Church Street School for Music & Art, and The Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation--to benefit music education for underprivileged youth.
Known as leaders of the underground alternative music movement and for their cult following, Athens, GA-based rockers R.E.M. have spent nearly three decades together, producing radio hits like "Drive," "Man on the Moon," "Everybody Hurts" and "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" The group's most recent work, 2008's "Accelerate," spent 18 weeks on The Billboard 200, peaking at No. 2.
