The Dead prep for spring dates with free NYC gigs
The Dead performed three free shows in clubs across New York City Monday night (3/31) in preparation for their upcoming spring outing.
The group, comprised of original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart alongside Warren Haynes and Jeff Chimenti, made their way around Manhattan in a matter of hours.
The evening began with a rare acoustic performance by Weir, Lesh and Haynes at the Angel Orensanz Center for the Arts on the Lower East Side, followed by back-to-back electric gigs with the full band at Midtown venues Gramercy Theatre and the Roseland Ballroom.
Between the three events, an estimated 4,100 fans got a sneak peek at The Dead's upcoming spring outing, which kicks off April 12 in Greensboro, NC, and runs through mid-May. The 22-date trek, which will be the first tour for the band in five years, will follow a two-set program with no opening act, with the exception of the May 16 show at The Gorge alongside the Allman Brothers.
Last Saturday (3/28), Weir and Lesh appeared as special guests at the last performance of a 15-night run by the Allman Brothers at New York's Beacon Theatre, playing on "Sugaree," "I Know You Rider" and "Franklin's Tower," according to a press release.
