Coldplay denies Satriani's copyright claim in court

Coldplay denied in court this week that their song "Viva La Vida" was copied from Joe Satriani 's song "If I Could Fly," according to published reports.

Satriani sued Coldplay in December, claiming the British band had used "substantial, original portions" of his 2004 song. He is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" from the song.

Lawyers for Coldplay argue that any similarities between the two songs were not enough to warrant damages, according to BBC News. In court papers filed in Los Angeles, Coldplay also claims Satriani's song "lacks originality" and should not receive copyright protection.

Satriani's lawyer reportedly said the band's response was typical for copyright infringement cases and said he thought the matter could have been resolved without legal action.
