Rod Stewart reunited with his former employer Jeff Beck Tuesday night (4/21) in Los Angeles to sing two covers that took the men back to their blues and R&B roots.
Stewart stepped onstage at the 800-capacity El Rey Theater after Beck had begun to play the melody of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready." Beck looked like a surprised schoolboy as Stewart, in his usual white sport coat and black tie, walked to the front of the stage carrying his own mic stand.
The two followed the inspirational ballad with a rousing version of "I Ain't Superstitious," the Willie Dixon tune that Stewart recorded as a member of the Jeff Beck Group in 1968. ("People Get Ready" was released in 1985 on Beck's album "Flash.")
It appears to be a one-time only appearance: About three months ago, Beck said he had no interest in reuniting the earliest edition of his band that was formed after he left the Yardbirds. Besides Stewart on vocals, that band featured Ron Wood on bass.
Tuesday's concert closed with Joss Stone joining Beck and band for Sly and the Family Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher."
