Born behind the iron curtain in 1980, singer/songwriter pianist Regina Spektor spent her early years in Moscow. As the only daughter of a music teacher mom and violinist dad, Spektor began piano lessons at age six.
Nine years later, thanks to perestroika, the family immigrated to the Bronx, and Spektor was soon inspired by the music of Ani DiFranco and Joni Mitchell . In 2001, she graduated with honors from the Conservatory of Music at SUNY Purchase College, and slowly gained recognition as a stellar anti-folk artist from the East Village.
Her broad vocal range has been compared to Tori Amos and Bjork , and she employs techniques such as the glottal stop featured in the single "Fidelity," as well as mic tapping and lip buzzing. Her 2006 album, "Begin to Hope," is now certified gold by the RIAA. Spektor's latest set, titled ""Far" is due out this month on Sire Records.
