Briefly: MP3.com, LeAnn Rimes, BSB, TV country

Here's what's going on with MP3.com:

Last January, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a copyright-infringement lawsuit against MP3.com on behalf of major record labels, including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group, BMG Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Recorded Music.

Over the course of last summer, all but Universal settled with MP3.com, the details of which settlements were not disclosed.

Last week, MP3.com resolved the Universal suit for $53.4 million. According to the Los Angeles Times, the two parties resolved the suit with a "consent judgment."

On Saturday (11/18), the Times reported that Sony and Time Warner are "threatening to go back to court to get more money." They feel that they can do this because of a "escalator clause" in their settlements, a clause which says that they can get more money from MP3.com if one of the other labels ends up getting more money than they got.

According to the Times, "The question is whether the 'consent judgment' signed by Universal and MP3.com on Tuesday is an award by the court, which wouldn't trigger a higher payment, or a settlement between the two parties, which would."

LeAnn Rimes, now 18 years old, has filed suit against Curb Records to escape a contract her parents signed on her behalf when she was a minor, the Dallas Morning News reported. Rimes is seeking the publishing rights to her past recordings and to be freed from her 1995 contract. That contract gave Curb the rights to her songs, recordings and a portion of their future profits.

The move is Rimes' latest attempt to gain control of her career's business dealings. In May, Rimes filed a lawsuit in Dallas County district court accusing her father and her former co-manager of cheating her of more than $7 million over five years.
