Paul McCartney to stage benefit concert for New York firefighters

Paul McCartney plans to stage an October concert in New York to benefit the city's firefighters in the aftermath of Sept. 11's terrorist attacks. During a Friday (9/21) appearance on New York radio station WPLJ, McCartney said that he is seeking a venue for the event. Further details weren't immediately available.

"I was here in New York when the disaster happened," McCartney said, according to a press release. "I was actually on a plane, on the tarmac, when the pilot said it'd all been closed down. I've been here in New York ever since and, in a way, I was pleased to be here to witness all the heroism."

He had planned to fly back home to the U.K. to plan an October concert at Red Square in Russia, an appearance that he has since postponed.

McCartney also said that his father was a fireman in Liverpool during World War II.
