Karl Denson's Tiny Universe to top SnoCore Icicle Ball lineup

SnoCore Icicle Ball--the eclectic half of the two annual, simultaneous SnoCore tours--is scheduled to kick off in Los Angeles on Feb. 15, the same day that the heavier SnoCore Rock jaunt launches in the Northeast. Jazz-funk outfit Karl Denson 's Tiny Universe (KDTU), will headline the Icicle Ball lineup for most of the tour.

Singer Nikka Costa, political hip-hop act Spearhead, rap duo Blackalicious, poet Saul Williams, Afro-Latin band Ozomatli and electronic dub band Sound Tribe Sector 9 are also on the Icicle Ball roster, which will vary from city to city. Details appear in the itinerary below.

KDTU founder Karl Denson released his most recent album, "Dance Lesson #2" (Blue Note), last May. The jazz saxophonist got his break in the late '80s and early '90s, a period during which he played on Lenny Kravitz's first three albums, and toured as part of Kravitz's backing band.

Last month, Nikka Costa wrapped up a headlining club tour of her own in support of her U.S. debut, last May's "Everybody Got Their Something" (Virgin).

"Stay Human" (Six Degrees), Spearhead's most recent release, also surfaced last May, while Blackalicious' full-length debut, "NIA" (Quannum Projects), hit stores in February 2000.

Best known as a writer and poet, Williams released his solo musical debut, "Amethyst Rock Star" (American), last May as well.

Ozomatli dropped its sophomore effort, "Embrace the Chaos" (Interscope), last September, while Sound Tribe Sector 9's most recent offering is the 2000 live set "Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace" (Landslide).

Both the SnoCore Icicle Ball and SnoCore Rock tours are scheduled to run through the end of March. The latter outing features Alien Ant Farm, Fenix TX and GlassJaw.

Last year's SnoCore Icicle Ball lineup featured co-headliners Les Claypool's Frog Brigade and Galactic.
