The inaugural Field Day festival--set to take place June 7-8 in Calverton, N.Y.--has been dealt a blow by Suffolk County health officials, who this week denied organizers a permit to operate.
According to published reports, officials fear that local police cannot handle the expected daily crowd of 40,000 who would be on hand to see acts including Radiohead, Beck, and the Beastie Boys .
Meanwhile, Newsday reported that environmentalists--claiming that an environmental review of the event wasn't completed--have filed suit against the town of Riverhead and event organizers.
Despite the setbacks, Field Day executive producer Andrew Dreskin said in a statement that he expects the show to go on.
"We are moving ahead with the permitting process in an effort to keep the Field Day Music Festival on track," he said. "The notice of denial was premature; generally permits for mass gatherings in New York State are issued 48 hours prior to the event. We are continuing to work closely with the Town of Riverhead and Riverhead Police, with ongoing meetings scheduled for this evening.
"Obviously we are disappointed by the statement from the Health Department but it appears to be based more on procedural issues than substantive problems. We believe we can resolve this issue quickly so that we can stage a festival that benefits the town, the county and a world wide audience that seeks to enjoy Field Day and the Riverhead area."
Staind , which had been scheduled to visit Toronto this week to play a concert and promote its new album, "14 Shades of Grey," has canceled the trip due to SARS fears.
"A decision was made to not have the band and their crew travel to Toronto after it was learned that the World Health Organization returned Toronto to the list of cities where new outbreaks of the disease were detected and a new health alert was issued by the U.S.-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advising travelers of a health concern in the city," said a statement issued by the band's publicist.
The group hopes to reschedule the show, according to the statement.
Paramount's MTV Films and Alphaville plan to produce a movie based on Avril Lavigne 's hit single "Sk8er Boi,” which tells the tale of a teenage girl who rejects a boy because her friends disapprove, only to regret the decision later. The producers have hired "ER" writer and producer David Zabel to adapt the song into a feature film.
Linkin Park is scheduled to perform a June 27 Las Vegas concert at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino's The Joint. The show takes place in conjunction with the June 27-29 Boost Mobile Pro of Skateboarding.
Twiztid is set to issue a new album titled "The Green Book" on July 1. The set--the band's first in more than three years--features guest spots from Layzie Bone, E-40, Bushwick Bill and Insane Clown Posse, among others.
