Hip-hop reigned supreme at Sunday's (8/29) 2004 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony, with Jay-Z and OutKast each pulling down four Moonman trophies.
OutKast's "Hey Ya!" took the night's top honor, Video of the Year, and also scored wins in the Best Hip-Hop Video, Best Special Effects and Best Art Direction categories. Jay-Z's "99 Problems," meanwhile--which was nominated for six awards--was crowned the winner in the Best Rap Video, Best Direction, Best Editing and Best Cinematography categories.
Usher and No Doubt were this year's only other multiple-award winners, with Usher victorious in the Best Male Video and Best Dance Video categories for his cut "Yeah!" (featuring Lil Jon & Ludacris), and No Doubt taking trophies in the Best Group Video and Best Pop Video categories for "It's My Life."
Other winners included Beyonce's "Naughty Girl" for Best Female Video; Alicia Keys' "If I Ain't Got You" for Best R&B Video; Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" for Best Rock Video; Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" for Breakthrough Video; and Maroon 5's "This Love" for Best New Artist in a Video.
Linkin Park's "Breaking the Habit" edged out entries from Christina Aguilera, Yellowcard, Good Charlotte and Simple Plan to take the Viewer's Choice award, which was determined via fan votes submitted online and by phone.
A complete list of winners is below.
As always, live performances punctuated the awards, which, for the first time in 20 years, were held not in New York City or Los Angeles, but instead took place in Miami.
Performers included Usher, who started things off with "Confessions, Pt. 2," and was soon joined by Lil Jon and Ludacris for his award-winning "Yeah!"; Alicia Keys, who performed her hit "If I Ain't Got You," then transitioned into Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" with help from Wonder and Lenny Kravitz; Kanye West, who tapped Chaka Khan to deliver live the sample of her work included in his hit "Through the Wire"; and OutKast, who closed the show with a medley of "Prototype," "The Way You Move," "Ghetto Musick" and "Hey Ya!"
