Other shows will take place in Paris, Berlin, Rome, Moscow, Johannesburg, Tokyo and the Toronto area.

In announcing the event at a London press conference last month, organizer Bob Geldof [ tickets ] said that the free Live 8 concerts don't aim to raise money. The objective, he said, is to draw attention to the debt, aid and trade issues confronting Africa. Geldof also co-founded 1985's Live Aid benefit.

Live 8 precedes next week's G8 summit in Scotland, where leaders of the top industrialized nations are expected to discuss the African debt issue, among other matters.

Organizers claim that Live 8 will be watched and listened to by more than 2 billion people. BBC-TV and radio will carry the London show, and partner broadcasters throughout the world will also carry the event. In the U.S., Live 8 will be carried by MTV, VH1, mtvU (MTV's college network), XM Satellite Radio (which will carry eight of the concerts in their entirety) and the Premiere Radio Networks.

AOL plans to webcast all of the concerts via its AOL Music site.
