CD Review: The Orange Peels, "Circling the Sun" (Parasol)
"Circling the Sun," the title track from The Orange Peels ' deliriously good third album, sounds like it could be the best modern-rock radio single of 2005.
These West Coast wonders, who worship at the alters of Burt Bacharach, The Beach Boys and The Beatles, have certainly done their jobs in creating an instantly memorable, highly addictive gem. Now, it's up to radio programmers to do their jobs and get these near-perfect three minutes of pop on the air.
The other nine tracks on the album are nearly as good. Singer, multi-instrumentalist and all-around studio wizard Allen Clapp comes across like Todd Rundgren's missing twin as he expands upon past Peels efforts to further challenge and warm listeners with mesmerizing vocal arrangements and sweeping soundscapes on "Something in You," "California Blue" and "Tonight Changes Everything."
The CD is both charmingly retro and refreshingly modern, coming across like a missing Byrds album that has been found and remixed by Daniel Lanois, as Clapp, bassist Jill Pries, new guitarist Oed Ronne and a trio of drummers beckon listeners with pure West Coast gold. And, if radio programmers get wise to "Circling the Sun," The Orange Peels could found themselves in the midst of a major gold rush.
